Elkader Register, Thur., 14 July 1898.

On Saturday afternoon our community was painfully shocked to hear of the death of Patrick Dinan, an aged and respected citizen of Littleport, as the result of a fall from a load of hay that he had assisted his son Lawrence in loading. He had been enjoying unusually good health for one of his advanced years, and on Saturday afternoon against his family's wishes he went to the field to help his son bring in a load of hay. When the load was partly on in some manner he missed his footing and fell forward striking on his head, the ground being very dry and hard where he fell. He was at once rendered all possible assistance but died a few minutes after falling.

Patrick Dinan was born in County Clare, Ireland, about the year 1822, and was therefore at the time of his death about 76 years of age. He came to America over fifty years ago, settling in the state of Massachusetts where he met and married Miss Ann Cullan, in the year 1856. From there he came to the state of Iowa in 1857 and settled in Cox Creek township on the farm that has ever since been his home.

Eleven children have been born to this union, eight of whom survive, all grown. The boys are James, in business at Mederville, Jerry living in Dubuque, Mary E., wife of Richard Leonard of Mederville; John, in Business at Elkader; Kate, wife of P. Downey, of Cox Creek; the daughters Jennie and Cordelia are at home as are the sons Michael and Lawrence.

Here in this almost unbroken wilderness forty-one years ago alone, save his estimable wife, he began his real life's work. whose last sad chapter ended in his tragic death last Saturday afternoon. Toiling from early morn till dewy eye, enduring all the hardships of pioneer life, he acquired for his declining years a competence and raised this large family, all of whom are eminently respected. He was one of that brave pioneer band that paved the way for our present civilization that crowns with glory the last decade of the nineteenth century.

He was a noble, generous, kind-hearted man who ever stood ready and willing to lend his neighbor and friend a helping hand in their hour of need, his home was ever the abode of hospitality, and no one in need ever went from his door empty handed. It was such homes as his that made civilization a blessing and human life one of happiness. He had reached the end of life's long journey, he had traveled the rough, uneven pathway far down its western slope, and though his years were rounded out and full of honor he will be sadly missed as a husband, a father, a friend and a neighbor, and as long as his pioneer associates shall survive he will be missed as a kind-hearted companion to whose tomb they can point and truthfully say that beneath it reposes the ashes of an honest man. His aged wife on whom falls this blow with crushing force survives. May the memory of that noble, peerless life sustain her in this hour of trial. For over forty-two years have they walked the path of life hand-in-hand, together rejoicing in its sunshine and sorrowing in its shade.

The funeral on Monday conducted by Rev. Dullard was among the largest ever held at this place, and the remains were laid tenderly to rest in the cemetery south of town. He died as he had lived honored and respected by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
