A funeral service for Gerald Michael (Jerry) Becker, 48 of Spencer was held Monday, July 3, 2000. 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Roger Linnan officiated at the service.
Mr. Becker died Friday, June 30, 2000 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer
Warner Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of arrangements
Gerald Michael (Jerry) Becker was born to Julius and rose (Miller) Becker, March 14, 1952 in Laurens. He was raised in Pocahontas, where he attended Pocahontas Catholic Elementary and High School, graduating in 1970
He attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville for two years. He interned the simmer of 1971 at the Mental Health Institute in Cherokee. In the summer of 1972, he volunteered for the Catholic Church Youth group, called Common Venture, in Mississippi. He then transferred to Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, where he met his wife, Margaret (Hart) Becker. He attained a B.A. degree in sociology with a minor in social work and psychology. He moved to Spencer nd began his job as a social worker in 1974 at the Iowa Department of Human Services. He was named Social Worker of the Year in 1997. He remained at DHS until he retired due to health reasons in October of 1999
Mr. Becker was one of the early founding members of the Clay County P.A.L.S. He worked parttime form many years at the Spencer Family YMCA as a building supervision. He was an active member of the Y's Men's Service Club
Survivors include his wife, Margaret and his children, Sarah, Amherst, Massachusetts; Jacob, Anna, Mark, Rachel and Paul all of Spencer
Siblings are Kathy Eike, Pocahontas; Dennis and Carol Becker, Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts; Marge and Ed Rabe, Alta; Janet and Bob Dodd, Humboldt; Cheryl and Jim Dauffenbach, Mankato, Minnesota and Connie Becker, Atlanta, Georgia
Other survivors included the Hart Family; M. Peter Hart, Mary and Gordon, Katy and Wally Boever, Peter and Colleen Hart, James Hart, John and Pam Hart, Maureen and Jerry Duhn, Joe and Barb Hart, Ibby and Tim Russell, Fran and Joan Hart, Theresa and Kurt Eckard and Tom and Anne Marie Hart; other relatives and friends
Preceding him in death were his parents, Julius and Rose; two brothers; Richard and Ronald and his mother in law, Izzy
