Eben Rushing, son of Peter Meredith Rushing and Nancy Crawford Rushing was born in Pike County, Illinois, and passed on in Alva, Okla. about 8 p.m. Feb. 2, 1946 at the age of 91 years and 15 days.

When he was a small boy, during the civil war his father moved with his family to Adair County, Mo. Sometime later they moved to Iowa, living first in Louisa county and later in Clarke county where he grew to manhood.

On Sept. 10, 1875, in Clarke county, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Margaret Lucinda Cline. To this union one child was born who passed on in infancy.

Later he and his wife came to Smith County, Kansas and with the exception of one year spent in Lewis County, Washington, he lived in Smith County and Cheyenne County, Kansas until the spring of 1895 when he joined the early settlers flocking into the Cherokee Strip and moved on a farm in Woods County west of Aline. Here he lived the life of the pioneer, enduring many hardships and privations, but staying on with the determination and faith such as those early settlers possessed.

It was here March 26, 1926 that his wife preceded him in death. He kept his home until 1939 when he retired in Aline. Here he spent much of his time visiting among his friends until about three years ago, not being able to live alone loner, he went to the home of a nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Taylor in Alva, where he was cared for until the end came.

He was the last of his immediate family but leaves to mourn his going a number of other relatives and a host of friends, to whom he was familiarly known as “Uncle Eben.”
