ANOTHER PIONEER HAS CROSSED OVER
After Long Illness S. W. Stevens Answers the Last CallAfter a long illness S. W. Stevens, another of the old veterans, passed away at 7 o’clock on Friday evening, Nov. 5, at the home of his adopted son, W. O. Stevens, in this city, aged 85 years. He had been in declining health for several years.
Funeral services were held at the Stevens home on Sunday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. C. D. Moore, pastor of the Congregational church, of which the deceased has been a consistent member. The services were largely attended, showing the esteem in which the deceased had been held. Members of the G.A.R. and W.R.C. attended in a body. Interment was had in the Meriden cemetery.
Mr. Stevens was born near Concord, New Hampshire in 1830. Some fifty years ago he was united in marriage with Elviria Upton. She preceded him to the grave some nine years ago. Mr. Stevens answered the call of his country in 1864, joining Co. K, 6th Minnesota infantry, and was a faithful soldier as he had been a good citizen. He came to Cherokee county about 34 years ago and settled at Meriden. He was an engineer by trade and for a number of years was employed in the Meriden mill. After the death of his wife, he came to make his home with his son in Cherokee. He was an upright, conscientious man – one of the old school, who know the right and do it.
Mr. Stevens is survived by two brothers, Lyman Stevens of Mason City, Iowa and Jerry Stevens of Lanora, Minn.
