Luella May Asbe was born May 16, 1918 in Charles City, Iowa to Henry A. and Ida Elizabeth (Eliason) Asbe and baptized in the Lutheran faith. Later, her family moved to Kensett, Iowa, where her father was a blacksmith. Luella was confirmed at Kensett and graduated from Kensett High School in 1936. She was the only member of her high school class to attend the last Kensett All School Reunion in 2006. After the death of her father in 1937, she moved with her family to Clear Lake. On July 20, 1940, she married Clyde Shoop at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. The couple later moved to Portland, Ore., and both worked in the Kaiser Shipyards during the World War II war effort. They became the parents of one daughter, Sandra Kay. They returned to live at Clear Lake following the war.

After her husbandís death in 1965, Luella worked as a housekeeper at the Holiday Inn in Mason City for 18 years.

Several area families will fondly remember elderly family members being visited and cared for by Luella in their homes and nursing home rooms. Upon her retirement at 70 years of age, Luella enjoyed serving her homemade treats to nursing home residents after escorting them to church services.
