Funeral services for Glen E. "Coon" Kern, 88, Mechanicsville, were held March 15, 1997 at the Mechanicsville Methodist church, with burial in the Rose Hill cemetery, Mechanicsville.

Mr. Kern died March 11 at the Monticello Care Center, following a long illness.

The son of Henry and Minerva Achey Kern, he was born Jan. 21, 1909 in Cedar Bluff. He attended Cass No. 4 rural country school. He married Bernice Koppenhaver May 8, 1937 in Oskaloosa.

Mr. Kern was a livestock buyer for many years, selling to Wilson's Meat Packing in Cedar Rapids. He owned and operated Kern's Trucking, retiring in 1970.

He joined the Mechanicsville fire department in 1941 and was an active member for over 50 years.

Mr. Kern is survived by his wife; a son, Bob and his special friend, Debra Harrington, Mechanicsville; a sister, Agnes Straub; and a brother, William Kern, both of Minnesota; 2 grandchildren, Debbie Bustamante, Denver, Colo; and Keith and wife Joannie Kern, Belle Plaine, Minn.; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Bustamante, Denver, Colo.; a great-grandson, Charlie Kern, Belle Plaine, Minn. and many nieces and nephews.
