Funeral services for Marie E. Hanks, 79, Stanwood, were held March 1, 1997 at the Stanwood Union church, with the Rev. William Harnish officiating. Mrs. Wayne Brown was the organist and the Tri-Tones sang. Pallbearers were Devon and Aaron Lamp, Nathan Pritchard, Roger Tenley, Wayne Brown and Mike Wagner. Burial was in the Stanwood cemetery.

Mrs. Hanks died Feb. 26 at Wheatland Manor Nursing Home, following a long illness.

The daughter of William and Caroline Schluter Jensen, she was born June 19, 1917 in West Liberty. She graduated from West Liberty high school and attended the University of Iowa. She married C. L. "Jack" Hanks April 5, 1942 in Clearwater, Fla.

Mrs. Hanks taught school for 25 years in Florida, Texas and Iowa, including 16 at Lincoln elementary school in Mechanicsville.

She was a member of the Stanwood Union church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved travel and history, and she especially loved teaching. Her family and friends were very important to her.

Mrs. Hanks is survived by her husband; 2 daughters, Carol Lamp, Tipton; and Linda (Mrs. Greg) Pritchard, Stanwood; 5 grandchildren, Devon and Aaron Lamp, and Jennifer, Heather and Nathan Pritchard; and a sister, Martha Goodwin, Phoenix, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kevin; and a brother, William Jensen.
