Memorial services for Lester A. Martin, 78, Iowa City, were held Feb. 15, 1997 at the George L. Gay Funeral Home and Crematorium in Iowa City, with the Rev. Scott Lothe officiating.
Mr. Martin died Feb. 13 at his home, following a short illness with cancer.
The son of Bert and Frances Conley Martin, he was born Feb. 3, 1919 in Cedar county. He attended high school in Springdale. He married Elsie Herring July 3, 1940 in Memphis, Mo.
Mr. Martin worked for the Crandic Railroad and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Train Men.
He and his wife were car enthusiasts. Throughout their 57 years of marriage they owned 70 cars. They were especially fond of Datsun and Nissan "Z" cars, owning 8 of the vehicles.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife; a daughter, Beryl (Michael) Rocca, Rochester; a son, Jerry (Janis) Martin, Bend, Ore. 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Robert Martin, Punta Gorda, Fla.; and Maury Martin, Cambridge, Ill.; a sister, Lucill Patterson, Glendale, Calif.; and a brother-in-law, Carl Snavely, Cedar Rapids.
Memorials may be made to the Iowa City Hospice.
