Memorial services for Dr. Wallace Herman Schroeder, 83, Des Moines and formerly of Tipton, were held Feb. 6, 1997 at Westminster Presbyterian church in Des Moines, with private burial in the Ames Municipal cemetery.

Dr. Schroeder died Feb. 3 of congestive heart failure at Calvin Manor Health Care Center in Des Moines.

The son of Herman and Margaret Murray Schroeder, he was born March 20, 1913 in Tipton. He graduated from the 8th grade after attending a one room country school. He then went to the Iowa School for the Blind in Vinton, where he received his high school diploma. Following graduation he enrolled in the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago.

He was a chiropractor in Bennett and then Tipton for a short time before moving to Mechanicsville, where he practiced for about 20 years.

Dr. Schroeder also served as a justice of the peace during that time.

He married Ruth Pirtle in 1959 and they moved to Des Moines, where he continued to practice. He was later employed as a counselor by the Iowa Commission for the Blind, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian church in Des Moines, the National Federation for the Blind, the Urbandale Lions Club and the National Chiropractic Society.

Dr. Schroeder is survived by his wife in Des Moines; a brother, Bob Schroeder, Tipton; a half-sister, Wanda Price, Cedar City, Utah; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian church, Hospice of Central Iowa, the National Federation for the Blind and the Good Samaritan Fund at Calvin Manor in Des Moines.
