J. B. BRUFF, LOCAL ATTORNEY, DIES ON BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

Atlantic Pioneer Passes [Away] on Birthday and [Died] Before Wedding Anniversary.

On the anniversary of his seventy-fourth birthday and one day before his forty-fourth wedding anniversary, James Berry Bruff, 74, passed away at his home, 908 Poplar street, at 1 p.m. Sunday, after a lingering illness with heart trouble.

Mr. Bruff, well known man, resided in Atlantic for the past forty-five years. A year after installing his law practice here he went to West Branch, Ia., where he married Miss Jessie Hanna Cartland of Maine, teaching school at West Branch. The couple returned to Atlantic to make their home. Mr. Bruff was born in Damaschus, O. At one time he was connected in an official capacity with Penn college of Oskaloosa, Ia. He was quite active some twenty years ago in Anti-Saloon league affairs.

Confined Last October.

Following a trip to California last September, Mr. Bruff was stricken with a sudden attack, and on Oct. 1 was confined to his bed where he has remained since. Mrs. Bruff was confined some three months ago with a paralytic stroke. Her present condition remains about the same.

Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday, 2:30 p. m., with the Rev. George D. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Atlantic cemetery.

The body is now at the Osborne & Tomlinson funeral home. Due to Mrs. Bruff's illness the casket will be opened at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon for friends wishing to get a last look at the deceased.

Surviving besides the widow are three sons, Joe C. Bruff of Atlantic, J. Russell Bruff of Santa Ana, Calif., and William C. Bruff of Whittier, Calif., and two daughters, Mrs. A. R. Fletcher, Torreon, Mex., and Mrs. H. R. Hinshaw of Alta, Ia.
