Atlantic Semi-Weekly Telegraph, June 22, 1903, Pg. 4 Col. 2:
The remains of John Anderson who was drowned in a pond near Milo, Mo., about a week ago, were brought here for burial. Services were held at the Methodist church Friday morning, after which interment took place in Evergreen cemetery. The funeral was under the direction of the Woodmen lodge, of which deceased was a member. Earl Woods wo was drowned with Anderson was buried at Milo early in the week. It seems that Woods was swimming in the pond which was an old prospect shaft partly filled up and fifteen or twenty feet in depth, when he went under. Noting that his companion was in distress, Anderson made the remark that he couldn't stand by and see him drown, and at once started to the rescue. When Woods rose to the surface Anderson attempted to draw him toward the bank, but Woods was struggling violently, and again sank, taking Anderson down with him. It was several hours before the bodies rose to the surface and were recovered. Both the young men had removed from this place a few months ago. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved relatives in their sorrow.
