Well Known and Long Time Resident of Atlantic Passes Away at Home on South Chestnut Street Early This Morning-Veteran of Civil War.

At the home on south Chestnut street at 1:35 this morning occurred the death of a long time and well known resident of this vicinity, John S. Barber, Deceased had been bedfast for the last three weeks and death, due to a weakened heart came this morning.
John Seth Barber was born Nov.27, 1845 at Westport, in Essex county, New York. He enlisted when eighteen years of age in Co. H 46th New York Volunteers, served one year and returned home, where he married Miss Katherine Kellogg, June 3rd, 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Barber then moved to Scott county, Iowa, and later to Atlantic, where they have lived for the last twenty years at the family home, 1205 Chestnut Street. For several years he had run a hack line here. Deceased leaves besides his wife, Mrs. Katherine Barber, three daughters, two sons and one grand-daughter; Mrs. R.L. Stone, Atlantic; Mrs B.F. Steadman, Des Moines; Mrs. W.H. Barker, Chicago, ILL; Arthur Barber, Atlantic; Miss Cecil Barber, Atlantic. All the children were here at the time of the death, Albert and Cecil having lived at home for some time.
The funeral will be held at the M.E.Church Friday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Handy will officiate. Interment will be made in the Atlantic cemetery.
