Unknown DateChild Killed In Fall From Car At Wiota
ALLAN LYNN STUETELBERG, 3, son of MR. and MRS. HAROLD H. STUETELBERG, living two miles east of Wiota, was instantly killed about 7 o’clock last evening when he fell from the family car into the path of an approaching machine. When the rear door of the Stutlelberg car flew open, the lad fell to the pavement and was struck by the eastbound car, driven by Bruce Bastian, 22, of Cedar Rapids.
The accident happened on U. S. 6 about a mile from the Stuetelberg home while the family was en route to Wiota. Bastian, who has been working in Chicago, was en route to his home in Cedar Rapids after enlisting in the army air corps at Omaha. The Stuetelberg child was struck by the bumper of the Bastian car just after he had fallen to the paving and the body was tossed by the impact to the north side of the road.
It is not known whether he was killed by the fall or by being struck by the car. The child’s neck was broken and he suffered a punctured chest, fractured skull and facial injuries. Coroner Dell Taylor exonerated Bastian from blame and there will be no inquest.
Mr. Stueleberg recently traded his old car, a coach, in on a new machine and wanted a coach because of the danger of children falling from the rear doors of a sedan. However, a coach model was not available when he obtained a new car.
The child was born in Cass county Nov. 15, 1946 and was baptized in the Wiota Methodist church, where he was a member of the Sunday school.
Surviving besides the parents are a brother, MARTIN, 1; the maternal grandparents, MR. and MRS. ELMER M. STUETELBERG; M. SMITH of Atlantic; the paternal grandmother, Mrs. F. H. STUETELBERG, of Wiota, two aunts. MILDRED STUETELBERG and Mrs. GRESS ROGERS of Toledo, Ia., and four uncles, ROBERT, GEORGE, and FREDERICK STUETELBERG and LELAND SMITH of Decatur, Ind.
Funeral services will be at the Wiota Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock, the Rev. Harold Butts of Lenox officiating. The remains are at the Roland, Peacock & Baxter funeral home and interment will be in the Atlantic cemetery.
