William J. Spies, Longtime Cass Resident, Dies
William J. Spies, 85, a long-time Cass county resident, who has been making his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Becker, 901 Laurel street, died at 10:15 this morning at the Atlantic Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient four weeks. He had been in failing health several years.
Mr. Spies, the son of Henry and Louise Weber Spies, was born at Shannon, Ill., April 18, 1866, and came with his parents to Cass county in a covered wagon when he was about eight years old. He was married to Ida E. Trego on Nov. 6, 1889, and they lived in the Cumberland vicinity until moving to Atlantic in 1920. Mr. Spies was secretary of the Cass County Farm Loan association a number of years and had lived here most of the time since retiring from the farm. He was a member of the Atlantic Methodist church.
Mrs. Spies died Aug. 31, 1935. Surviving are two sons, Floyd J. Spies of Atlantic and H. Harold Spies of Cumberland; one daughter, Mrs. Clair D. Becker of Atlantic; two brothers, John Spies of Wiota and Alfred Spies of Easton, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Holaday of Massena; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Peter and George Spies.
Funeral services will be held at 2p.m. Friday at the Roland, Peacock & Baxter funeral home, the Rev. A.D. Steffenson officiating. The remains will be at the funeral home until the service hour and interment will be in the Cumberland cemetery.
