Elsie M. Deike, (95) of Waverly, Iowa, died on August 28, 2013 at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation. Elsie Malinda Deike was born on August 10, 1918, in Butler County, rural Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of William and Louise (Graue) Klunder. Elsie was baptized on September 15, 1918 and confirmed on August 23, 1930 all at Pleasant Valley Church, rural Clarksville. She attended school at Beaver Creek in Butler County through the 8th grade. Following her schooling, Elsie helped several area farm families.
On June 1, 1939, Elsie was united in marriage to Harold D. Deike at the Evangelical Church in Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm in Butler County and in 1956 moved to a farm in rural Waverly.
While living in Waverly, Elsie worked at Carver's Restaurant, Fred's Super Value, B.E. Mick's (Patricia's Fabric's), as a cook at the Bartels Lutheran Home and also at the Shell Rock Care Center until she retired in 1983.
Harold died on June 4, 1987, and Elsie continued to live on the farm until September of 1988, when she made her home at the Waverly Manor. While at the Waverly Homes, Elsie worked for 7 years as the resident custodian and was on the Tenant Board for 14 years. Elsie was a longtime member of Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly. Elsie enjoyed gardening and flowers, bird watching, reading and many crafts.
She is survived by two daughters, Jan Mitchell and her husband, Tom, and Carol Ann Laube all of Waverly; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 3 great-great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; seven sisters, Louise Wedeking, Lena Stoxen, Ida Klunder (9 years old), Ella Klunder (3 years old); Bertha Wedeking, Hilda Schmadeke, Edna Ringleb; and two brothers, Henry and Albert Klunder.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 10:30 am at the First United Church of Christ-Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Peter Wenzel officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for an hour before services on Saturday at the church.
Burial will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Clarksville. Memorials may be directed to the church or Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center and online condolences for Elsie may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
