In Response To: look-up help (mary horner)

the names I am searching
JEREMIAH IRWIN
B. AUG 15 1825 CAMBRIA CO PA
D. APR 11 1885 BUCHANON CO IA
His burial record indicates he was a Civil War veteran. Therefore it is possible he was a pensioner. If he was there may be extremely valuable records available describing his family, birth, marriage details and who knows what else.

They have indexed every cemetery and obituary from local newspapers into one master file.

ELIZABETH IRWIN w/o Jeremiah IRWIN
B. MAY 2 1825 PA
D. MAR 7 1897 BUCHANON CO IA?
Elizabeth probably applied for a widows pension and so the same may be said about the pension file. It would be attached to that of Jeremiah’s in any event. An obit could be found but could be very brief. Be sure to ask for funeral notice as relatives may be listed in the notice that were not listed in the obit. If Jeremiah did not apply for a pension his wife probably did under his name after his death. In any event a service file may describe his place of birth in more detail and is worth getting.

All of these newspapers are available through your local public library via interlibrary loan if you want to do this work. The Iowa State Historical Society was a pioneer in getting funding for filming historical Iowa papers. For a annual fee they may also be available through Newspaperarchive.com a subscription company owned by Heritage microfilm, the company that did much of the microfilming of Iowa papers
EMORY IRWIN s/o Jeremiah&Elizabeth IRWIN
B. SEP 11 1862 NEWTON TWP BUCHANON IA
D. FEB 21 1959 INDEPENDENCE IA
I would write to the Independence Public Library or the genealogy society. Obituaries are only as useful as the information supplied by the informant. When a person lives until 97 y.o they outlive much of their family and friends and business associates. If this person is really important to you I would start reading newspapers during critical years of his life if those could be identified. This could be more work that anyone wants but gives a whole new meaning to family history research
He may be a person of the same name listed at http://www.firstworldwar.com/features/rainbowwarriors.htm, a list of WWI soldiers from Iowa
Bride's Name: Mattie M. Johnson
Bride's Birth Date: 1874
Bride's Birthplace: Quasqueton, Iowa
Bride's Age: 21
Marriage Date: 13 Nov 1895
Bride's Father's Name:

Lewis Johnson
Bride's Mother's Name: Matilda Page
Found in Cono, Buchanan IA in 1880 Familysearch.org. Interesting because several children have different surnames possibly suggesting orphan train children. This family has roots in Ohio, Virginia and Maryland, all very interesting and historic states fun to trace family history. Somebody named Lewis Johnson filed on Buchanan County land in 1853 and many others later as indicated on the BLM GLO website.
FRANKLIN IRWIN s/o Jeremiah & Elizabeth IRWIN
I believe this child was born & died in Libery Twp. BUCHANON CO IA
B. NOV 28 1864
D. APR 2 1867
I doubt you will be able to get much information on this child. If as is likely he died of a childhood disease under a doctor’s care there would be no death record. Death records were not kept in Iowa until about 1880. There is a slim chance there was a death notice in a newspaper.
