Maxine Matilda Schmitz, 90, of Raymond, IA, died after a short illness, on November 20, 2022, at UnityPoint – Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, IA.

Maxine Matilda Meier was born January 3, 1932, at home in rural Gilbertville, IA, the daughter of Fred Albert Meier and Eva Margaret (Etringer) Meier. She graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in Gilbertville, with the class of 1949. Before she was married, she worked as a nannie and cleaned houses. On June 23, 1953, she was united in marriage to James Mathias Schmitz at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. The couple made their home on the farm in rural Black Hawk County where they raised their children. Later, the couple moved into Raymond and after retirement, they enjoyed volunteering at the food bank. James preceded her in death in 2005.

Maxine liked to stay active and enjoyed the camaraderie of water aerobics at the YMCA. She was part of the Cursillo Movement and was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Raymond.

Maxine is survived by five sons, Tony (Claudia) Schmitz of Burnsville, MN, Tim (Ellen) Schmitz of Minneapolis, MN, Nick (Stephanie) Schmitz of Raymond, IA, Vince (Kathie) Schmitz of Grasston, MN, Chris (Sherry) Schmitz of Jesup, IA; four daughters, Geriann (Chris) Raway of St. Paul, MN, Carolyn (Joe) Breuer of West Union, IA, Lucy (Jim) Breuer of Waterloo, IA, Eva (Paul) Moritz of Ankeny, IA; 33 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; three brothers, Fred (Stella) Meier of Gilbertville, IA, Bernard Meier of Hampton, VA, Kenneth (Moe) Meier of Hollywood, FL; three sisters, Rita Smith of Sumner, IA, Eva Schmitz of Jesup, IA, Phyllis Reiter of Jesup, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; one son, Gerry Schmitz; one daughter, Josephine (Randall) Snyder; one grandson, Dan Breuer; one brother, Joseph Meier; two sisters, Ann Reiter, Mary Steimel; and one daughter-in-law, Mary Frances Schmitz.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Saturday, November 26, 2022, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, IA. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Raymond.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 25th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with a rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services, Saturday, at the church.

White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, is in charge of arrangements.
