PIONEER CITIZEN
ANSWERS SUMMONS
Was Highly Respected Resident of
Audubon County For a Period
of Over Forty-five Years
Friends of Mr. August Burr, Sr.,
were saddened when the news of his
death, which occurred Tuesday morn-
ing at 4:30, was reported about the
city of Exira. Mr. Burr, who farmed
in Greeley township, north and east
of Exira, for a number of years, hav-
ing acquired a competency, retired and
with his faithful helpmate, moved to
the city of Audubon some sixteen
years ago. Mrs. Burr preceded her
husband in death some three years
ago, since which time his sister and
daughter have kept the home with
him.

Mr. Burr was a man of pleasing
disposition and numbered his friends
amongst all who knew him.

August Burr, Sr; was born in Meck-
linberg, (Schwerin) Germany, on De-
cember 16, 1845, and died at his home
207 Second Ave; Audubon, Iowa, on
Tuesday morning, July 22, 1924, aged
78 years, 7 months and 6 days, his ill-
ness covering a period of six weeks.
Through the illness of Mr. Burr, he
suffered intensely at times, but bore
his sufferings with fortitude, always
looking after the welfare of others.
He had the constant care of his chil-
dren and all that earthly hands could
do was done to ease his pain and suf-
ferings, until the final call by the
Heavenly Father to his eternal re-
ward.

Mr. Burr arrived in America in
1873 and in 1876 was united in mar-
raige with Miss Marie Schalow at
Iowa City, Iowa, on November 26th,
living in Johnson county for three
years, then moved to Audubon county
where he has lived continuously for
45 years. This union was blessed
with six children, four daughters and
two sons, namely: Mrs. Lena Savage
Mrs. Henriette Owen, Miss Minnie
Burr, Mrs. Sophia Rubel, Henry and
August Burr, Jr., all residing in
Audubon county, who with eight
grandchildren and one sister, Miss
Richie Burr, survive to revere the
memory of a kind and loving father
and brother. Mr. Burr was preceded
in death by his ever faithful and duti-
ful wife just three years ago this
month, on July 14, 1921, that being
the first break in the family tie.

Mr. Burr ever felt interested in af-
fairs pertaining to the community and
upbuilding of the town, as well as the
welfare of friends and neighbors, but
his chief interest always was his home
and family. He has witnessed the
passing of many of his early Iowa
friends, but as the years have passed
Mr. Burr by honorable and upright
living made numberless other true
and loyal friends who will learn with
regret his passing to the great be-
yond.

Despite the fact that he suffered
great physical pain during his illness,
Mr. Burr met these trying days with
splendid fortitude and courage and
Christian faith, having been a faith-
ful and devout member of St. John's
Lutheran church during all his life-
time.

Mr. Burr, one of Audubon county's
pioneer citizens, farmed in Greeley
township for a large number of years
and retired in 1908, moving to Audu-
bon, where he has resided since.

Few men have lived in this com-
munity who derived more out of life
than has August Burr--no man has
exceeded him in true worth. He did
not crave high places. He was devoid
of that form of ambition which wears
out real men. He knew his place and
his power and whatever he undertook
he succeeded in admirably. His
death at a ripe old age, attended by
the regrets of everybody that even
knew him, is the highest tribute that
can be paid. Mr. Burr had the con-
fidence of all who knew him and was
a christian and a man.

Funeral services will be held Friday
afternoon at two o'clock at the Pres-
byterian church in Audubon with Rev.
Friedrich in charge. Intement will
be in Arlington Heights cemetery.
