LOCAL NEWS

Roy Davis, the youngest son of
Mrs. J. P. Lair, who has been in the
service of Uncle Sam both in Porto
Rico and the island of Samar, one
of the Philippine group, arrived at
his home in this city the first of the
week looking well and hearty. He
has no particular love for the citi-
zens of Samar and thinks it is as im-
possible to tame and civilize them
as it would be to tame the tiger of
the jungle. His experience of wad-
ing through rice swamps, often up
to his arm pits in water and mud
and again climbing mountains are
not conducive to increasing the
ranks of the army, yet he passed
through it all without receiving a
scratch from a bolo or poisoned
arrow or the hideous wound made
by the creased bullet of the enemy.
He has not decided fully as yet
what his future course may be.

Note: Parents of Roy Davis were William J. Davis and Nancy Jane Tongate.
