Since our last issue Death has made another inroad upon our city and taken from our midst Mrs. Clara D. Battles, wife of our townsman Mr. A.L. Battles. Her death occurred at about 7 o'clock on Thursday evening, and though her life had for a number of days hung by a slender thread, the blow fell none the less heavily upon her large circle of friends and acquaintances.

The funeral services took place on Friday afternoon at three o'clock, from the family residence, Rev. H.W. Houghton officiating, and the remains were consigned to their last resting place in Oak Hill only a few hours after it had been the scene of the impressive Decoration ceremonies.

Mrs. Battles was born in Franklin County, New York, and at the time of her death was 52 years old.

On the 19th of October, 1852, she was united [in] marriage to her now bereaved husband, and the result of this union was a family of five children, all of whom are yet living, and all but one of whom were born in Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. Battles having moved here the year of their marriage.

For a number of years previous to her death she had been a great sufferer, from a complication of diseases, which baffled all medical skill. Yet through all she was patient and submissive. She was a lady of retiring disposition but of sterling qualities, and endeared herself to a large circle of friends, whose sympathy is now warmly extended to the bereaved household.

~Lansing Journal, Wednesday, June 4, 1879; pg 3

Note: Thursday of the previous week was May 29th, and the funeral on Friday May 30th.
