SCHAFER

Chas. Schafer, the poor wreck, lost a little child last Monday. It was probably starved to death, as its attenuated features gave every evidence of it.

There are two other children, we learn, also very sick, probably from the same cause. The family is poverty stricken and are subjects of charity. The father is a miserable sot, but yet the wife and little ones ought not to be allowed to starve if he is, and while there is plenty among others.

He, we understand, is making an effort to do something for himself and family, and if he is trying, let us all help him by giving him work. He is certainly a pitiable object.

THE SCHAFER FAMILY - What is to be done with them, is a question now canvassed among some of our citizens who are interested in the welfare of the poor in the city. Mrs. Schafer has become a professional beggar, while her husband hangs around home and grows fat on that which she begs to eat. He is as healthy and robust looking, and as able to work as any laboring man in town.

We are a peaceable and quiet man, and do not wish to counsel wrong, but we do think it would be beneficial to Schafeer to split about a thousand feet of lumber into kindling wood over that end of him which he is holding chairs down with. He would perhaps then be willing to work or else leave town. He is certainly not an object of charity and ought to be bounced.
