Portrait and Biographical Album of Benton County, Iowa
Chicago: Chapman Brothers, 1887

GEORGE W. REED, farmer, residing upon section 31, Taylor Township, was born in Butler County, Ohio, Dec. 4, 1835, being a son of John and Nancy (Morrison) Reed, his father a native of Pennsylvania and his mother of New Jersey. His parents moved from Ohio to Illinois in the spring of 1851, locating at Island Grove, Sangamon County, where they remained until their deaths, the father passing away in June, 1861, and the mother in February, 1876.

George was the youngest of ten children, and was reared on a farm, remaining at home until the fall of 1875, when he came to Benton County, Iowa, and located on section 33, Taylor Township, where he purchased 160 acres of improved land. Here he remained until the fall of 1884, when he sold out, with the intention of going West. Not feeling satisfied to make a decided move without seeing the country, he made up his mind to wait one year, and still remains in the county.

Mr. Reed was married, Nov. 12, 1861, to Christina Cline, daughter of George and Catherine Cline, both deceased. They have nine children — Viola F., born Dec. 21, 1862; Benjamin P., Nov. 7, 1864; Robert K., Oct. 27, 1866; George O., Dec. 25, 1868; Alice, Feb. 6, 1871; Mary, Sept. 17, 1875; Anna, Oct. 4, 1877; Samuel, Nov. 11, 1879; John, April 26, 1882.

Mr. and Mrs. Reed are devoted members of the United Brethren Church.
