The Iowa Heritage Digital Collection also holds a similar image (slightly wider view, a bit farther away) and identifies the buildings (left to right): 1)Gates General Store; 2)John Heiken's Implement Store; 3)John Johnson's Blacksmith Shop; 5)Atlantic Northern & Southern Rry. Depot; 4)Gates Elevator (Burnt down).

Gates appears to have been located in the northeast corner of Section 31, Oakfield Twp. Gates is clearly visible on the 1930 map below on the left, and less so on the 1921 map on the right.
