Steele Saves Schoolhouse

One of those queer fires we occasionally read about, the origin of which is ascribed to mice and matches, occurred last Thursday evening, and were it not for the timely appearance of Roy Steele the Pleasant Ridge District in Union Prairie twp. would now be minus a schoolhouse.

About 9:30 Thursday evening Roy Steele was passing hat is generally known as the Jones schoolhouse, about five miles northwest of Waukon, when he noticed a blaze shining through the windows and proceeded to investigate.

He found the organ and a pile of books and papers on top if [sic] it burning and the flames attacking the walls He spread the alarm and neighbors George Toney and Francis Zoll soon arrived on the scene and assisted him in throwing the burning organ out and putting out the fire with snow.

In the meantime Fire Chief, Carl Smedsrud, had been telephoned for help and with Harold Peterson drove out in his car, taking two cylinders of chemicals from the fire truck, but the fire was out when they arrived.

The damage is not great and is covered by insurance with the Tollef Johnson agency. It will not interfere with the sessions of school of whch Miss Rita Burke is teacher.
