“Band Concert” by Marion Gilmore in 1941, was the winning entry in a WPA competition for a mural in the Corning, Iowa, post office. Although she changed the look of the bandstand and park, Central Park, a Corning resident wrote to Washington that "this mural artistically and truthfully depicts the happy community way of life in the finest little town in the most livable section of the most prosperous state of the most democratic country in the whole topsy-turvy world in this problematical year of 1941." The original painting is on display in the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum. |
