Cears Cemetery

In May 2007, my daughter, Ruth Johnson, a volunteer, and I visited the Cears Cemetery. We probably wouldn't have found it if it hadn't have been for Ruth. She knew the area and directed us to the cemetery.

To reach this cemetery drive south from Adair, Iowa, on County Highway N54 (Delta Avenue). Continue south some miles and take a left (go east) on 235th Street. Turn left (north) at Dover Avenue. The cemetery is visible from the road on the west side of the road.

Cears Cemetery is located in between two farm fields a little ways away from the road. You will need to walk a short way along a fence line to reach the cemetery. Access is not difficult, although you may want to avoid walking up to the cemetery on muddy days, and it could be a rough path for people with walking problems or who use a wheelchair.

History of the cemetery is unknown for certain, although it is thought that it began as a cemetery for the Cears family, and some neighbors and friends were also allowed to be buried there. The cemetery is tidy and well-kept, and someone has made an effort at repairing some of the broken stones. Ownership is unknown.
