"The spelling Eldredge is an error. His name was actually Elbridge. I have some of his probate papers. He was my greatgrandfather's older brother"

History of Fredericksburg and Vicinity, by Dr. Pitts

Eldredge L. Gilbert, son of Lovell R. and Clarissa Gilbert was born in Rock county, Wisconsin in 1841. When a youth of fifteen he left his native state and came to Clayton county, Iowa, where he lived fourteen years. In 1876 he married Rebecca M. Bishop. They located on 80 acres, section 7, where they lived for several years. This farm is now owned by Wm. Case. At the time they left here for Wisconsin they had three children living: Louie, Lovell R. and Walter B., and one dead- Mattie A. who died June 3, 1883. A strong love for the Iand of his birth and some other circumstances, took the man and his family to Wisconsin. He was a sharp man, but one of the best deals he ever made was when he married Rebecca M. Bishop.

W.S. Pitts, MD was a physician and surgeon in Fredericksburg from 1865 until he retired & moved to Wright county in October 1906. Dr. Pitts was well-known around the United States for writing the song and music: "The Little Brown Church in the Vale". Dr. Pitts died in Brooklyn on September 25, 1918 at the age of 88. His reminiscent biographies of Fredericksburg (Chickasaw county) area settlers were published in various issues of the 'Fredericksburg News' throughout 1906.

~notes: Elbridge, age 19, is enumerated on the 1860 Federal census, Clayton co. Read twp. living with his parents Lovill R. (age 46, b. VT), Lydia (age 38, b. NY) and siblings: Charles, 17; Amelia, 10; Frank, 9; Lafayette, 6; George, 4; and Egbert, 2. All of the children were born in WI except Egbert who was b. in IA
