I found a couple references to surname Tofte in Allamakee county (on this website) so possibly some relation.

OBITUARY
John A. Tofte, a well known pioneer here, aged 91 years, died on Dec. 20 at the home of his son, A.J. Tofte. His death was caused by a stroke of appolexy. The funeral services were held Friday, with interment in the Norwegian cemetery.

Immigrated 1883, to Ossian (Winneshiek co.)
Married Louise Helseth
Children: Mrs. T.H. Kerr; Alfred, Clarence & Josephine Hjerleid
