Joins WAVES

Miss Frances Wood, oldest daughter of Mrs. Lola Wood, 1312 Farnam street, has been accepted into the WAVES and will report to Cedar Falls, Ia. on Feb. 25.

Miss Wood graduated from Clinton high school and has been employed as bookkeeper by the W.G. Block Co in Rock Island. For the past year she has been active in the Masquers.

Another sister, Lieut. Dorothy Wood, is a nurse at Camp Phillips, Kan.

Sisters Serve

A "100 per cent family" may be credited to Mrs. Lola Wood, 1312 Farnam street, mother of two daughters in the army nurses corps and the WAVES. Mrs. Wood is now employed at the Rock Island arsenal, helping to keep up production of war materials.

Lieut. Dorothy Alice Wood is now stationed at the evacuation hospital in Hyder, Ariz., and was recently home on leave. She entered the nurse corps in December 1942 and was first stationed at Ft. Des Moines. She received her training at Mercy hospital and before going to Arizona was located at Camp Phillips, Kan.

Lola F. Wood, storekeeper third class, is now secretary to the disbursing officer at the naval air station, Glenview, Ill. She received her basic training at Cedar Falls, and attended storekeeper school at Indiana university.

DOROTHY ALICE (WOOD) ANGERER, 86, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at Bishop Drumm
Care Center in Johnston, Iowa.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2007 at the Basilica of Saint John Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa, of which she was a member.

Burial with military honors will follow at GLENDALE CEMETERY, in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.

Dorothy was born on February 12, 1920, in Princeton, Iowa to Willis and Lola Boone WOOD.

She was a graduate of Marycrest College in Davenport,Iowa, earning a bachelors degree and later earned a masters degree from the University of Iowa.

She was also a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

Dorothy proudly served as a 1st Lieutenant in the ARMY NURSE'S CORPS, during WORLD WAR II. She was stationed in the South Pacific, until she was honorably discharged in 1946.

Dorothy married Frank Angerer in 1950 and to this union, five children were born. In 1954, Dorothy moved to Des Moines, where she made her home. For more than 22 years, she was formerly employed as a Nursing Instructor for all the Des Moines area Schools of Nursing, until she retired in 1982. She was a member of the Blinded Veterans Association and a life member of University of Iowa Alumni.

She is survived by her son, Matthew (Mary) Angerer of Carlisle; daughter-in-law, Gigi Angerer of Des Moines; son-in-law, Carlos Hernandez of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Mary Grace, Margaret, Frank, Christian, Hannah and Ambrose Angerer and Sarah (Chris) Murphy all of Des Moines; and seven great-grandchildren, Max, Sam, Maddy and Amanda Murphy, Carmen Punelli and Phillip and Isazah Shade also all of Des Moines.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Frank in 1969; two sons, John and Mark; two daughters, Mary and Anne; one sister, Frances; and one grandson, George.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where a Rosary service will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Dorothy became a faithful listener to I.R.I.S. Radio and that became a very important part of her day. In recognition of that support she graciously received as her blindness grew, the family has respectfully requested that memorials be made to I.R.I.S. Radio, Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road.
