FIRST IOWA AIR-WAC OVERSEAS

Pvt. Rita M. Teal (second from right), of Keosauqua, Ia., helps her fellow WACs unload their luggage after reaching their destination in France. Private Teal holds the distinction of being the first Iowa woman to enlist directly in the women's army corps as an Air-WAC and to go overseas. She received her basic training at Fort Des Moines after enlisting on Armistance Day, 1943.
