Miss Schafer to Complete Course

Miss Bertha Schafer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schafer of Muscatine, will graduate from St. Elizabeth hospital, Covington, Ky., on June 20. Miss Schafer graduated from St. Mary's high school in 1939.

IN NURSING CORPS -- Lt. Bertha Scahfer, serving in the Army Nursing Corps, is now on duty in the South Pacific area, her mother, Mrs. Anna Schafer, 512 East Eleventh street, has been informed.

Lt. Schafer has been in service since Jan. 3, 1943. She took her training in St. Elizabeth's hospital at Covington, Ky.,graduating in June 1942. She was also graduated from St. Mary's high school in the class of 1939.

Lieut. Schafer Recovering Form Serious Illness

Lieut. Bertha Schafer, of the army nurse corps, is reported recovering in a hospital in the Netherlands East Indies from a serious illness with diphtheria according to word received by her mother, Mrs. Anna Schafer, 512 East Eleventh street.

Lieut. Schafer has been in the army nurse corps for nearly two years and overseas for the past 15 months, in the Pacific war theater.

ICY PATH TO WORK IN DES MOINES FRIDAY

Motorists found the going slow and treacherous on ice-coated Des Moines streets Friday morning. Three accidents were reported before the ice broke up. This auto, drive by Bertha Schafer, 32, a nurse at Veterans hospital, skidded out of control on ice in the 2800 block of Douglas avenue at 8:40 a.m. Miss Schafer suffered bruises.  Damage to car was estimated at $500. The state highway patrol reported ice on highways all over Iowa was gone or breaking up at 11 a.m. as temperature climbed above the freezing mark. The mid-afternoon temperature in Des Moines was 38.

Bertha Louise Schafer was born Mar. 18, 1920 to Frank J. and Anna Hinkel Schafer.

Bertha served in World War II with the U.S. Army.
