Ensign Phyllis Rutledge, 23, the first Des Moines girl to be commissioned in the coast guard SPARS, is spending a brief leave in Des Moines before reporting for duty at Stillwater, Okla.
Miss Rutledge graduated from Grinnell college last spring, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs C.P. Rutledge of 3507 Forest Ave. She attended Roosevelt High school here.
Ensign Rutledge reported to basic training at Smith college in Northampton, Mass on Feb. 13. She received her advance training at the coast guard academy at New London, Conn., where she was commissioned Mar. 31.
She will be attached to a naval training school at Oklahoma A and M college and will report there May 9th.

It's a big job...ours and yours. It must be done quickly, thoroughly and successfully. We've all got to pitch in and help...buy and sell to reach the tremendous goal set for the nation. The service was read Apr. 1 by the Chaplain C. Earl Page at the chapel of the coast guard training station at Palm Beach, Fla. Following a short visit with the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Rutledge, 3507 Forest ave., Lieutenant Vierheller will report for duty on the west coast and Mrs. Vierheller will return to her station at Palm Beach.
