Girl From Eldora Meets King George

Eldora, Ia -- Frank Rodgers was thrilled Wednesday night to hear that his sister, Miss Retha Opal Rodgers of Hubbard, was one of the four nurses that met King George on his visit to north Africa.

Miss Rodgers, who went to north Africa last January, besides being a nurse, also flies an ambulance plane carrying wounded form the battlefield to the hospital. She had been flying for four years before going overseas.

Prior to going into army service aboard, Miss Rodgers was the head nurse in the eye, ear, and thorat department at the University hospital in Iowa City.

Eldora -- Lt. Retha Opal Rodgers, sister of Frank Rodgers of Eldora, and native of Hubbard, Hardin county, who is a member of the army nurses corps, has been awarded the air medal along with two other nurses, the first nurses in the European war theater to receive the award.

Overseas since the early part of 1943, Lieutenant Rodgers as been stationed in the England assisting with the air evacuation of casualties from the battlefields of France. She has taken part in the Tunisian, Sicilian and Salerno campaigns.

Eldora -- Retha Opal Rodgers, sister of Frank Rogers of Eldora, has been promoted to captain in the army nurse corps. Captain Rodgers is stationed in England. She was one of the first nurses to go overseas and flew an ambulance plane in north Africa. Before enlisting Captain Rodgers was assistant in the eye, ear, nose and throat department at the University hospital in Iowa City.
