SENIOR STUDENT NURSES GET BADGES -- Formal presentation of American Red Cross Nursing service senior reserve badges was made Friday afternoon at French hall to 15 of the 16 members of the 1942 graduating class of St. Luke's School of Nursing. Photographed above are recipients of the badges:

First row: Wanda Casper, Dorothy Miller, Ethel Guenther, Doris Yanausch, Ruth Upton;

Second row: Dorothy Hagen, Doris Meyers, Margaret Whalen, Elaine Ricketts, Wylma Callahan;

Third row: Gladys Cook, Maxine Parnell, Marjorie Kelsh, Julia Mohl and Virginia Oehler.

Ten of the girls will be in the service by January, two in the navy and eight in the army.

TIPTON, Ia. -- Word was received here this week by Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Miller of Tipton that their daughter, Miss Dorothy E. Miller, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the Women's Reserve Battalion of the U.S. Marine corps at Holyoke college, South Hadley, Mass.

Miss Miller is one of the first to volunteer in the Marines in Iowa. She enlisted Feb 13., was inducted Fed. 20 and left on March 12 for Smith college, Northampton, Mass, later being transferred to Holyoke college where the first Marine Officers Training school was held. Prior to the completion of the corps, a group of ten, which included Miss Miller were selected and commissioned. Miss Miller was the sixth Marine to be commissioned in the United States and the first from Iowa.

On April 24 Lieutenant Miller was sent to the Marine base at Camp LeJeune, New River, N.C., where she is serving in an administrative capacity.

Dorothy Elizabeth Miller Ralston Reid was born Oct. 16, 1911 to Clare Shelton and Winifred Warren Miller. She died Feb. 4, 1998 and is buried in Masonic Cemetery, Tipton, IA.

Lt. Col. Reid served with the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II and Korea.
