WEST UNION WAVE LEAVES FOR TRAINING
West Union, Ia -- Miss Irene Martin, Wave enlistee, left Tuesday night for Chicago to join other recruits on the trip to New York for basic training. Miss Martin, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin, West Union, was employed in the county auditor's office a few weeks, after serving several years as school secretary.
She was given a surprise birthday party Monday evening at the home of Methodist pastor, Rev. and Mrs. Sterling J. Baldwin, and presented a teacher's bible in recognition of her services in the beginner's department. She also was guest of honor of members of the D club, Miss Elsie Smith, hostess.
