As Iowa's December "heat wave" broke more records Sunday by sending the mercury to 69 degrees, these amateur photographers took to Union park with their box camera where they sat on a bench in the warm sun to plan another picture. They are Margaret Herbold (left), 22, 0f 1442 Lyon st and Frances Smith,18, of 1437 Lyon st. Although they didn't know it, the day's peak temperature, recorded at the airport at 2:00, tied an all-time December high made on Dec. 6, 1939, and exceeded by 14 degrees the all-time high for Dec. 8 The reason for the "unusual" weather, according to the weatherman, is that cold air masses to the north of us have stayed dry. And when the air is dry there isn't many clouds, the sun gets an open shot at the earth, and the earth stays warm during the daylight hours. But it won't last long. Decidedly colder weather is now scheduled to arrive in the state by Tuesday.
