Lt. Irene Caroline Froning

Irene Caroline Froning was born Jan. 28, 1911 to Arthur Clarence and Bertha Caroline Meyer Froning.

Miss Irene C. Froning, daughter of Mrs. Bertha Froning of Sheffield, formerly of this city (Webster City, IA) has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the marine corps women’s reserve after completing eight weeks’ intensive training as a member of the 16th officer candidate class at Camp LeJeune, N. C. She was selected for officer training from the ranks after several months’ duty as a control tower operator and as a wing leader at the marine corps air station at Cherry Point and Polloksville field, N.C. She was employed in this city (Webster City) for several years as secretary of the school board.*

June 25, 1945 Irene was married to Cooper Nelson Van Hook in Santa Ana, CA. They were the parents of two daughters. She died Oct. 27, 1993 at Manteca, San Joaquin Co., CA.
