WAVE of the Day

Katherine Jean Duncan of 207 1-3 Brady street, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Duncan, Birmingham, Ia., has enlisted in the WAVES and is awaiting orders to report to Hunter college, New York City, for her navy "boot" training.

Seaman Duncan attended Birmingham high school where she was active in basketball, mixed chorus, girl's glee club and 4-H club work. She also attended Parson college during the summer school session. She is employed at the International Harvester Co. at the present time.

She has three brothers in the service. Pfc. James E. Duncan, army. Pvt. Leo E. Duncan, army and Ray Duncan, C.M. first class, navy.

Katherine Duncan Become Bride of Lemuel S. Helms

Columbus Junction -- Marriage vows of Katherine Jean Duncan, Y3/c, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Duncan of Birmingham, Ia., and Lemuel Swanner Helms, ACM, of the United States navy, son of Lemuel Helms and the late Mrs. Helms of Rutledge, Ala., were exchanged Saturday, Nov. 3 at the First Baptist church at Jacksonville, Fla.

Mrs. Helms and her attendant are serving with the WAVES at the Naval Air station at Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Helms, formerly of Columbus Junction, is a graduate of Birmingham high school and attended Parson college at Fairfield, later teaching in the Van Buren county schools. Prior to her enlistment in June 1944, she was employed at the International Harvester company at Rock Island.

Mr. Helms has served with the navy since February 1940 having spent 32 months overseas. He has been stationed at the Naval Air station at Jacksonville for the past 10 months.
