Joins WAVES

Miss Mary Jane Cox, daughter of Mrs. Willard W. Stevens of 1519 West Sixteenth street, Davenport, left Saturday for Hunter college in New York to take her preliminary training in the WAVES. She was sworn in June 3.

Prior to enlisting, Miss Cox was secretary in the law offices of Cook, McLoughlin & Blair.

PREPARES RECORDS

Preparing records and calling men for court cases is the duty to which Mary Jane Cox, yeoman second class, has been assigned at the U.S. Naval Training center at Great Lakes, Ill.

Yeoman Cox is the daughter of Willard E. Stevens of 517 1/2 Main street, Davenport. She enlisted in the WAVES in June 1943 and was sent to Hunter college, New York for "boot" training. Upon completion of her four weeks period of training there she was rated a yeoman, third class and sent to Great Lakes.

IN HAWAII -- Two Waves from Iowa have reported for duty in Hawaii. They are Yeoman Second Class Mary Jane Cox (left), Davenport, and Storekeepers Third Class Lois Betty Smith, Avery. Storekeeper Smith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Smith, Avery. After receiving a commercial certificate from Albia high school, she was employed by Iowa Ordnance Plant, Burlington. She joined the WAVES in September, 1943, and has been on duty at Naval Air Station, Ottumwa, Ia. Yeoman Cox is the daughter of Willard W. Stephen, 517 Main street, Davenport.

The navy department announces that WAVE Mary Jane Cox of Davenport, now serving at the naval air station at Kahului, Maui, Hawaii, has been advance to the rating of yeoman first class.

This advancement has come to Moss Cox in recognition of outstanding faithfulness and skill in the performance of duty and completion of the course of study prescribed for this new rating.

WAVE Cox's home is 517 Main street.

MARY JANE COX WINS PROMOTION

Mary Jane Cox, stepdaughter of Willard W. Stevens, 517 Main street, has been promoted to the rating of yeoman, first class, at a U.S. naval air station in Hawaii, where she is stationed with a detachment of WAVES.
