WOMEN IN SERVICE

WITH THE SIXTH ARMY IN THE PHILIPPINES -- Landing in the Philippines at at time when the Japs were still carrying out nuisance raids on our installations was packed with more excitement for Lieut. Jean Consamus R.N., Iowa City, than anything she had ever before seen or ever hopes sto see.

Lieutenant Consamus was aboard a ship which had just arrived in the harbor when a Jap plane came in toward the ship and loosed a torpedo. Lieutenant Consamus was on the deck when the torpedo was released and she saw it leave the belly of the plane and drop in the water headed in the direction of the ship on which she was aboard. After a few moments of apprehension, the torpedo sped harmlessly by the stern of the ship.

Lieutenant is a graduate of St. Mary's high school and the Mercy hospital school of nursing. Prior to entering the army, she was on the nursing staff of Grant hospital in Chicago. She entered service in February, 1942 and received her training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.

Lieutenant Consamus landed in the southwest Pacific in June, 1943, and has since been caring for the sick and wounded of Lieut. Gen. Walter Krueger's 6th army as they have fought their way up from New Guinea into the Philippines.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Consamus, Melrose Lake.
