Cpl. Ruth D. Baldon

 

Miss Ruth D. Baldon, 1328 Sturdivant street, Davenport, has received orders to report at Des Moines for her physical examination for entry into the WAAC. Miss Baldon has been employed by the Seagrams Distillery Co., at Lawrenceburg, Ind. and only recently returned to Davenport.

Davenport Girl With the WAACS

The day that Ruth Baldon reached the age of 21 years, the minimum age requirement, she hurried to the recruiting office to file her application for the Women's' Army Auxiliary corps. She previously studied accounting at the American Institute of Commerce.

Auxiliary Baldon arrived in Des Moines Feb 21, and is now taking her basic training in the Women's army. She spent one week in the barracks at the receiving center where she received all her government issue uniform and equipment which was issued to the new recruits From there she was moved to the 5th Company 3rd Regiment fo her four weeks of basic training.

Said Auxiliary Baldon, "There was no one in the immediate family eligible for service and I realized that by joining the WAAC I could release a man from his desk job so that he might go to the front."

This cellophane cape, worn by Pfc. Ruth Baldon of Davenport, Ia., is a protection against chemical liquids released in battle. Designed for battlefront wear, the cape is folded in to a light compact package that service men can open and put on in five seconds flat. Used household fat salvaged by American housewives is required in the manufacture of cellophane, one of the new, indispensable products used widely in modern warfare.

Cpl. Ruth Baldon of the WAC has left for Ft. Jay, Governor's Island, N.Y., after spending a five-day furlough with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Baldon, 2037 West Fourth street. She is stationed in the adjutant general's office of the Second service command.

Cpl. Baldon, who has been in the Women's Army corps since Dec. 9, 1942, was previously employed as an accountant at Lawrenceburg, Ind., and after beginning service, received her training in the finance division at Des Moines, Pine Camp, N.Y., and Wake Forest college, N.C.

Miss Baldon is a graduate of Dillsboro, Ind., high school.
