Ship Is Named for Wayne County by U. S. Navy

Commander of New Vessel Writes County Official of Launching

During the month of August, a ship of the U. S. navy will be launched carrying the name of U. S. S. Wayne. This information was revealed in a letter to A. T. Dotts, deputy county clerk, from Com. T. V. Cooper of Baltimore, Md., who will be commanding officer of the new ship.

The ship is another in the list of those named for counties, although it cannot be strictly said that the vessel was named for Wayne county, Iowa, since there are counties of the same name in many other states.

The letter to the county official did not reveal what kind of ship the Wayne was to be, but it is assumed it must be a fighting ship, since the commander stated that “The officers and crew of the U. S. S. Wayne are pleased to have the opportunity to carry the name of your county into active theaters of war.”
