Ersel Raymond Wakefield was born Mar. 17, 1914 to William Henry and Cadie Grace ‘Grace’ Stargel Wakefield. He died Oct. 13, 1943 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and has a cenotaph at the Philadelphia Cemetery, Garfield, IA.
Cpl. Wakefield served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He was KIA in Salerno, Italy and awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart. He was also the holder of the Bronze Star Medal with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, American Defense Service Award, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, 1st Award and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII.
