William Eugene VanWinkle was born Nov. 22, 1920 to Vern Samuel and Helen E. Nelson VanWinkle. He died Mar. 1, 1943 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, North Africa American Cemetery, Tunis, Tunisia.
Lt. VanWinkle served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 415th Bomber Squadron, 98th Bomber Group, Heavy and was MIA/FOD/KIA when his bomber crew failed to return to base after a bombing mission over Naples, Italy. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
