Thomas Dale ‘Dale’ Thompson was born Feb. 12, 1923 to Andrew and Tida Twedt Thompson. He died July 20, 2010 and is buried in Homewood Cemetery, Ellsworth, IA.

Private Thompson served with the U.S. Army in World War II with Headquarters Co. 3rd Battalion 5th Infantry Regiment 71st Division.

Dale “Happy” Thompson, age 87, a longtime Ellsworth resident died Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Stratford Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Stratford, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at the Community Center in Ellsworth. Burial with military honors followed at Homewood Cemetery in Ellsworth. Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the Community Center. Becker Funeral and Cremation Service of Jewell is caring for Dale and his family.

Thomas Dale Thompson was born February 12, 1923 in Ellsworth, Iowa to Andrew and Tida (Twedt) Thompson. He grew up in Ellsworth, graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946. On July 20, 1947 he married Marjorie Helland in Belmond, Iowa. Dale worked for Kufus Oil in Ellsworth and Land O’ Lakes in Ellsworth from 1959-1988. He helped George Abell on his farm for many years. Dale was a member of the Ellsworth Fire Department from 1953-1993. He was a member of the Ellsworth United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. He loved bowling, fishing, and gardening. Dale enjoyed helping at the Community Center, Homewood Cemetery, and South Hamilton baseball games. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Dale is survived by his son, Jim (Sue) Thompson of Ely, Iowa; his daughter, Peg (Mark) Thompson of Jewell; two grandchildren, Mark (Dee) Hoefer of Jewell and Mary Ann (Mike) Hoefer of North Carolina; four great grandchildren, Thomas “Dylan” Hoefer Christopher Michael Hodge, Harlie Rene Hodge, and Hunter Austin Hodge; and a sister, Velva Killin of Iowa Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marjorie.
