ALMOST HOME
Randall—Lewis Thompson of the Seabees and a brother of Bert Thompson of Randall, Iowa, arrived recently in San Francisco, just two years to the day since he shipped from there. He has lived in foxholes and in danger zones almost continuously on various South Pacific islands and was never wounded, but upon arriving in San Francisco, he made a misstep in getting off a bus, fell and broke his ankle and will be hospitalized there at least six weeks.

He and his son, Lyle Thompson, enlisted and entered the service together, two and a half years ago, but at Chicago Lyle was sent to Great Lakes and Lewis to the east coast. They both expected to be home on leave together, but Lyle’s leave was cancelled on his ship, the Philadelphia, was selected to go as escort to President Truman’s ship to Germany.
