Sgt. George David Thompson

 

 

 

 

 

 

George David Thompson was born in 1924 to George Senior and Mary Picard Thompson. After the death of both of his parents he lived with his Aunt and Uncle, Bessie and Carl Pinkele in Webster City, IA. He died Oct. 2, 2015 and is buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA.

Private Thompson was drafted into the U.S. Army, trained as a machine-gunner, and shipped to Marseilles as part of the 222nd infantry, Rainbow Division. George, soon a Sergeant, headed north through France into southern Germany, where his division liberated Dachau concentration camp. He never forgot it. After his discharge in 1946 he attended the University of Iowa, receiving a B.A. and law degree.
