Del Monroe Thayer was born Mar. 22, 1911 to Alfonso Ames and Lillie Thayer. He died Sept. 11, 1943, was buried at sea, and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, Nettuno, Italy and in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, IA.
Petty Officer Thayer served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Savannah (CL-42) and was MIA/KIA aboard that ship in the service of his country. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
