Ute, Iowa—Sergeant Earl S. Tharp, formerly of Ute, has been missing in action since May 13. His wife and infant son reside in Omaha. He went to England, a tail gunner on a bomber.

Earl Sherman Tharp was born June 4, 1920 to Marion and Elsie Churchill Tharp. He died May 13, 1943 and is buried in Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

Sgt. Tharp served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 365th Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomber Group, Heavy. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
