Soldier Husband of Sioux Cityan Awarded Medal for Heroism

Second Lieut. Darrell L. Taylor on October 23, 1943, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by direction of the president for heroism in action against the enemy. The award, made by Lieut. Gen. Millard F. Harmon, commanding United States army forces in the south Pacific area, was given for Lieut. Taylor’s part in attacking a Japanese machinegun position at Vuru Village, Vagunu, New Georgia group, Solomon Islands, on June 30, 1943.

Lieut. Taylor, despite a shoulder wound and loss of blood, continued to lead his platoon through jungle terrain until they had reached such a position that would enable them to accomplish their mission. Then, after receiving first aid, he returned to the lines and continued to command his platoon until ordered to the rear the following morning.

Mrs. Taylor resides at 4019 Ridge Avenue.
